His recommendation for the Global Youth Media Council was for CNN, Fox, BBC, France La Monde, Al Jazeera etc to work together to provide an international TV show for young people. Jordi discussed how the AOC has been connecting and providing a platform for various international organisations, with the aim of providing the very best and latest media literacy articles. The AOC is also one of the first organisations to provide translations of articles on media literacy from English to Arabic.

Jordi is also promoting Plural+, an international film platform for young people. Plural+ is a great starting point for aspiring film makers: numerous organisations offer a variety of prizes (including the chance to be part of a Sundance Film Festivalworkshop) and the best films are released internationally as a DVD.

Between sessions at the Summit, we talked to Karen Cirillo, Executive Producer of Children’s Broadcasting Initiatives at UNICEF in New York. Her “controversial idea” for the Global Youth Media Council is that the media should have quotas to ensure a variety of voices are presented to the public.

Bonzel Mendala, Angola

Notable examples of attendees from far afield include Bonzel Mendala, who is 17 year-old student journalist from from Angola who has been working in the media since an early age.

Bonzel’s trip to Karlstad has lead to a personal first – Bonzo’s first ever trip on a boat!

It was a long journey from the Australian Youth Media Council who’s members are from all across Australia.

We caught of with member, Adrian Amoddio, who had to travel over 30 hours to be at the World Summit.

Kondwani is a student and a UNICEF worker all the way from Zambia who helped to organise a conference on Climate Change aimed at young people from across Zambia.

Others include Yorka from Bolivia, is 13 and had to travel a total of 36 hours and 4 plane journeys to get the World Summit.

The Council’s lone Bolivian representative travelled for 13 hours on a bus just to attain a visa in Bolivia’s capital. Her father, a miner, gave up a weeks worth of wages so he could travel with Yorka to the capital in order to attend the World Summit.

We the Global Youth Media Council propose that the following recommendations are reached by the World Summit on Media for Children and Youth 2013. You can sign up to the petition here.

Limited access to the internet
• Governments, mobile operators and media multi nationals should work together to insure free or affordable internet access in schools and libraries.

Making sure children are safe using the internet
• Education about the danger on the internet, starting in primary school, including rights and obligations

Children and young people are not involved in making decisions
• More articles written by children and youth in national and local newspapers
• Every country should have a Youth Media Council – to comment on children’s TV content

Negative representation of children and young people in the media
• Media must adopt existing ethical guidelines on reporting on children and youth, to include a balanced representation.

Lack of media literacy
• Media education should be a part of the curriculum from an early age in every country.

Commercial interest versus social responsibility
• Only products that are linked with children’s positive development should be associated with children’s media
• More non-commercial newspaper/radio/tv channel, funded by foundation,governments and charities.

Putnam attended the World Summit on Media for Children and Youth to deliver a talk about the challenges for children, young people and the education system in the wake of a world being transfored by digital technologies.

During the summit, the Global Youth Media Council were lucky enough to meet with Lord Putnam and outlined what we had achieved and what we hope to do in the future. Putnam was very optimistic and pledged his support and signed our petition.

The Founder of the World Summit on Media for Children and Youth Foundation, Patricia Edgar, also signed our petition at the closing ceremony of the summit.
